Do you need a Queensland Safety Certificate formerly called a Roadworthy Certificate (RWC)? Our Mt Isa Mechanical Service Centre is fully licensed by Queensland Transport to perform Inspections and issue Safety Certificates.  What is a Safety Certificate? The Safety Certificate offers buyers better protection and makes sure vehicles being offered for disposal or being re-registered are safe - reducing the likelihood of crashes caused by defective vehicles. In Queensland the laws are very strict about Safety Certificates on vehicles that are sold or that are being re-registered for the first time or from interstate. A Safety Certificate is issued after a vehicle passes an minimum safety standard inspection. A Safety Certificate covers basic items essential for safe operation of your car: brakes body damage body rust lights steering suspension tyres windscreen Note: a safety inspection is not a comprehensive inspection of the vehicle or the engine. Before purchasing a used vehicle, we recommend that you contact us for a full mechanical inspection of the vehicle. It is the seller's legal responsibility to provide the Safety Certificate and complete any roadworthiness related repairs required before the certificate can be issued. You should never be persuaded to get your own Safety Certificate as any necessary repairs will be at your cost. When does my car need a safety certificate? If you have a vehicle registered in another state or that has been un-registered for more than 3 months or are registering the vehicle for the first time - the car needs to pass a safety inspection and receive a Safety Certificate before they can be registered. Safety certificate rules have changed
From 1 September 2021, vehicle owners are no longer required to obtain and display a safety certificate before a vehicle is offered for sale. This includes when a vehicle is offered for sale on a dealer's lot, advertised online, or a 'for sale' sign is displayed on the vehicle.
It is still a requirement for the seller to obtain a safety certificate before disposing of a registered vehicle. Penalties may apply if a safety certificate is not obtained before selling a registered vehicle A Safety Certificate lasts for 1 month or 2000km if it is for private use, or 2 months 1000km if it is for a dealership. The Safety Certificate is for only one sale or re-registration. Even if you decide to sell the vehicle a week after you purchase it, and the Safety Certificate is still valid, you will need to pass another safety inspection and receive a new safety certificate. Does my vehicle need a safety certificate? Unless exempt, unregistered second hand and registered interstate vehicles must have a Safety Certificate as part of the Queensland pre-registration process. This includes:  cars  motorbikes  trailers and caravans with an aggregate trailer mass (ATM) of 0.751 - 3.50 tonnes  any other vehicles up to 4.50t gross vehicle mass (GVM).  All cars fitted with LPG require a Gas Certificate to be issued by a licensed gas fitter (in addition to the Safety Certificate). This involves an inspection to ensure the gas equipment is safe. What parts of my car will be inspected? New Car Service Frequently asked questions What is a consumer guarantee? Under Australian Consumer Law (ACL), you are protected by a Consumer Guarantee which takes into account purchase price, realistic expectations of when a failure might occur, advertising claims and the conditions under which a vehicle should operate. Previously known as a Statutory Warranty, the Consumer Guarantee does not have a specific time limit associated with it nor can it ever be replaced by a manufacturers warranty, which is in addition to the Consumer Guarantee. What is a manufacturers warranty? Manufacturers warranties are essentially a promise to the buyer that the new vehicle will be free from defects for a specific time and that any such defects will entitle buyers to a repair or other compensation. According to the Competition and Consumer Act (2010), such warranties cannot state that a vehicle must be returned to an authorised dealer for service. What is an express or extended warranty? Often new car dealers will try to include "express" or "extended" warranties, sometimes for free, in the purchase of your new vehicle. These ‘extra' warranties are in addition to the manufacturers warranty and may include quite specific restrictions or provisions, usually in unclear or confusing language. Many of these contracts actually provide little or no additional benefits over and above the consumer's basic statutory rights and can tie the unwary buyer into a long term agreement with a specific car dealership. Keep your cool, without global warming. A proactive car air conditioning approach to protecting our environment.  As Australia begins phasing down HFC use (from January 2018), many new vehicle manufacturers may be switching to new air conditioning systems using the more environmentally friendly refrigerant R-1234yf, instead of R-134a. The benefits of using R-1234yf "Twelve Thirty Four", as R-1234yf is sometimes known, is an HFO type refrigerant delivering high performance, resulting in a more efficient air-conditioning system, fewer emissions and reduced fuel consumption. Hydrofluoroolefins (HFO's) have a double carbon bond meaning they trap less heat in the atmosphere than Hydrofluorocarbons (HFC's) and break down faster. Importantly, R-1234yf systems are specifically engineered to prevent refrigerant leakage and loss, including into the interior of the vehicle. The leakage of refrigerants contributes considerably to greenhouse gases. Why the switch? Older type refrigerants accumulate in the upper atmosphere as greenhouse gases and contribute significantly to Global Warming for a considerable time. In the mid-'90s, the old R-12 (or Freon), which takes a long time to break down into a non-greenhouse gas, was replaced with R134a, which breaks down much quicker. R-1234yf takes that improvement to the next level, breaking down in less than half the time of R-134a (and a fraction of the time R-12 can take). R-134a will remain in use for some time and a licensed mechanic can still service R-134a air con systems, but new vehicles will likely use the new systems with R-1234yf. Some already are. Irrespective of what type of refrigerant your car air conditioner uses, a car service workshop undertaking air conditioner service must have the right knowledge and equipment to handle these gases responsibly.
